Take a little straw and mix it with a little bale and what do ya got?

Well, in this case…a house.

Wait…wasn’t the little pig with the straw house doomed to having his home blown down by the evil wolf?

Hmmm…well, good point, yes…but you see, he forgot to mortar his!  (wink)

When I thought I had finally reached the end of odd home construction possibilities, here this one sat, waiting patiently for its moment in the cheapest built homes spotlight.

Not to fear, little straw bale house, your moment of fame has finally come!

From the wide open sunny plains of Africa, to the sprawling wheat fields of the Midwest, the straw bale building has lived on, as homes became constructed of hay straw bundles piled high and pinned gracefully together with bamboo, rebar or wood.

The surface of the bales are then covered in wire mesh and then coated thickly with variety of cement mixes.

In order to have a lasting and strong standing straw bale house, one must live in a particularly dry climate, or the straw risks becoming overly humidified and begins to rot and become too heavy for its frame.

Building straw bale houses is wonderfully affordable, however, and many have chosen the life of a straw house abode.

When built correctly, straw bale homes can be astonishingly breathtaking, just as much so as any other more ordinarily constructed house.

Straw bale homes are also wonderfully energy efficient as well as powerful in promoting a “go green” lifestyle…it is earth friendly; and they’re pretty affordable too, ranging around $20,000.
